Increasing Number of International Students in Poland
International students at Polish institutions have surpassed 100,000 for the first time, after a dramatic recent increase that has seen the total treble in a decade. Almost 9% of students in Poland are currently from other countries.
According to fresh estimates released by the education magazine Perspektywy, there are 102,200 international students enrolled currently at the universities of Poland, in the Ministry of Education’s database for the 2022/23 academic year.
When yearly exchange students are included, the amount rises to 105,400, according to data from Statistics Poland (GUS). This is over 18% higher than the prior academic year. Increasing Number of International Students in Poland
By far the greatest group of international students comprises 48,700 Ukrainians. Over 12,000 have joined Polish Universities since last year, indicating that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a factor.
Belarus (12,000), Turkey (3,800), Zimbabwe (3,600), India (2,700), Azerbaijan (2,500), Uzbekistan (2,100), China (1,800), Kazakhstan (1,700), and Nigeria (1,600) are the next most significant among the Increasing Number of International Students in Poland.
Perspektywy observes that, based on the fact that there are approximately 1.2 million students at Polish universities, 8.7% are now foreign – a figure close to the European average.
The magazine notes that when Poland joined the EU in 2004, it had only 8,800 foreign students, reflecting the tremendous work done by Polish higher education over the past 19 years. This represented only 0.5% of all International Students at that time and the lowest proportion in Europe.
The Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP) and Perspektywy’s educational foundation introduced the “Study in Poland” program in 2005 intending to promote Polish universities abroad and attract international students to Poland.

At Polish universities, the fields of management (19,400 students), computer technology (10,400 students), and medicine (7,100 students) are the most popular choices for international students to study.
Approximately 37% of international students study English, 37% study Polish, and 3% study a language other than English. Slightly less than half as many female students are studying in Poland as there are male students (46% vs. 54%).
