University of Kragujevac
Brief History: On July 1st, 1838, Prince Milos Obrenovi issued a decree in Kragujevac creating the Lyceum of the Principality of Serbia, the first higher education institution in modern-day Serbia. Atanasije Nikolic (1803–1882) was its first rector. The Lyceum of the Principality of Serbia sowed the seeds of higher education, from which the first modern higher education institutions emerged in the early 1960s.
Kragujevac University was established on May 21, 1976. The university at the time consisted of five faculties: Mechanical Engineering, Economics, Law, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Medicine, and the College of Mechanical Engineering in Kraljevo, as well as two research institutes: the Small Grains Research Institute in Kragujevac and the Fruit Research Institute in Čačak. The University of Kragujevac was founded and expanded on the idea of a scattered university, with 12 faculties spread over six cities in Central Serbia: Kragujevac, Čačak, Jagodina, Kraljevo, Užice, and Vrnjačka Banja. However, the university was able to transform this into one of its most distinguishing advantages, allowing it to use economic and geographical potentials as well as human resources from the region, which spans 5000 square kilometers and has a population of over 2.5 million people.

With a student population of 23.000 and 1.250 academic staff, the University of Kragujevac is now a contemporary education and research institution encompassing practically all major fields of teaching and research.
Additionally, the University Library is a University of Kragujevac member. It is a general scientific library whose operations support the scientific, research, and instructional endeavors of the university. This contributes to the effective execution of research, the validation and distribution of knowledge, and the scholarly and scientific innovation exhibited by faculty members and staff of the University of Kragujevac’s institutes and faculties.
The university combines the work of all its faculties and organizational units under one unique policy. This is done to improve the quality of teaching and to keep moving higher education forward while also teaching students in the arts, sciences, and research.
