Short History of Lodz University of Technology

The first steps were taken after the fall of the January Uprising. There was a project to establish a Polytechnic Institute in Łódź. The classes were to begin in 1865 and some areas were allotted for university buildings even temporary rooms were hired and professors were recruited but due to many bureaucratic obstacles and geopolitical changes that happened in the 19th century, all arrangements went in vain. The setup of the university didn’t take place for almost another century. It was no sooner than after the 2nd world war when the idea of establishing the University of Technology ould become a reality. On 8 May 1945, Professor Bohdan Stefanowski from the Warsaw University of Technology arrived in Lodz, and with assistance from his closest associates, intensive work was triggered to create the university. Finally, on 24 May 1945, the decree was signed that officially brought the Lodz University of Technology into being.

525 enrolees were admitted to the first year of studies, and 458 students continued their further years of studies. The university had 33 departments with 33 professors, 15 senior lecturers, and 53 assistant professors. The buildings of the Rosenblatt factory were quickly adapted. With the increasing numbers of students and academics every year the premises of the university were improving, and the tasks more and more challenging.

Today, The Lodz University of Technology is a dynamic and well-established higher education institution known far beyond Poland for its achievements in research, science, and international cooperation, and with strong traditions in Engineering.
